Who we are,

Why we started

Our Guiding Principles!

Golden Gate Fields Park is an independent community effort dedicated to exploring the full potential of one of the most significant public space opportunities in California.

We are landscape architects, planners, designers, environmental professionals, park advocates, recreation leaders, and community members who believe Golden Gate Fields deserves a thoughtful, ambitious, and inclusive conversation before irreversible decisions are made.

We support public acquisition of the site.

We support ecological restoration.

We support a transparent public planning process.

We also believe that great parks are created by asking bigger questions.

How should the park be programmed?

How will it be funded?

What opportunities exist for reuse?

How do we create a park that is active, financially sustainable, ecologically resilient, and deeply connected to the communities it serves?

These are the conversations we hope to encourage.

Why We Started

Golden Gate Fields is a once-in-a-generation opportunity.

Like many people throughout the East Bay, we became excited by the possibility of transforming this remarkable waterfront into a public park. As we followed the project, however, we realized that many of the conversations focused primarily on acquisition and conservation, while broader questions about recreation, programming, long-term funding, adaptive reuse, and governance received far less attention.

This website was created to broaden that conversation.

Not to promote a single solution.

But to encourage the exploration of many possibilities before irreversible decisions are made.

Our Guiding Principles

  • Support public acquisition.

  • Think beyond a blank slate.

  • Explore opportunities for reuse.

  • Design for ecology and active public life.

  • Build parks that can sustain themselves.

  • Preserve flexibility before making irreversible decisions.

  • Encourage thoughtful, informed public dialogue.
